Central Texas Cow-Calf Clinic to be held Jan. 9
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will be hosting the 39th annual Central Texas Cow-Calf Clinic on Jan. 9 at the Milam County Youth Exposition Building, 301 S. Houston St. in Cameron.
Registration will be from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., with presentations starting at 8 a.m. and concluding at 2:30 p.m. RSVPs are requested by Jan. 6 to the AgriLife Extension office in Milam County at 254-605-0226. The cost of the program is $20.
Three general Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be given to pesticides applicators license holders.
Topics will include:
• Current market trends and predictions and consideration for 2020 — Jason Johnson, AgriLife Extension economist in Stephenville.
• Winter and spring supplementation and nutritional requirements — Jason Cleere, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist in College Station. The focus of this discussion will be to assist producers to manage costs and effectively calculate cattle nutrition.
• Estate planning and intergenerational land transfer — Ginger Bosse, certified public accountant for Seidel & Schroeder in Brenham. Property ownership, taxes, estate planning and successful transfer of land from one generation to the next are important things to consider for landowners and cattle families with large and small operations.
• Live demonstration to recognize and avoid calving difficulty — Joe Paschal, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist in College Station, and Dr. Thomas Hairgrove, AgriLife Extension specialist in College Station. The demonstration will include successful calving techniques, necessary equipment, cow examination, calf care and deciding when to intervene.
• Integrity Beef, a new level of excellence in cattle production — Robert Wells, professional animal scientist and livestock consultant, Noble Research Institute in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The Integrity Beef program simplifies cow-calf producer management decisions and increases the marketability of calves through the production of high quality, uniform, preconditioned cattle.
