2019 Cornbelt Cow-Calf Conference to Address Economics, Alternative Management Techniques

January 26 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

OTTUMWA, Iowa ― The premier educational event in Iowa for cow-calf producers is offering a comprehensive package of information to attendees this month. The popular Cornbelt Cow-Calf Conference has provided timely, accurate and important information to the state’s beef cattle industry for more than 40 years. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef specialist Patrick Wall said this year’s conference, set for Jan. 26 at the Bridge View Center in Ottumwa, will continue that successful tradition.

The 2019 program targets financial management, genetic selection and low-stress animal handling in the general sessions. New this year to the agenda is a bit of entertainment prior to lunch with some cowboy poetry. The lunch hour will feature newly elected Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig.

In response to two consecutive years of significant drought in southeast Iowa, afternoon breakout sessions will address forage analysis and cow nutrition as well as implementing water systems and conservation practices in adverse conditions. Using cover crops and annual forages in a grazing plan will also demonstrate alternative methods to producing forage. Finally, transitioning the cattle operation to the next generation is a topic that continues to have widespread appeal; an experienced farm management consultant will address leasing arrangements and other transition methods.

The Conference website www.cornbeltcowcalf.com contains details of the conference agenda, speaker profiles and more. Doors will open at 8 a.m. for this year’s conference and trade show at the Bridge View Center in Ottumwa. The official welcome is at 9 a.m., followed by three general sessions then lunch and exhibit viewing. The afternoon consists of one additional general session, followed by two repeating breakout sessions with four choices. Again, admission is FREE, and includes a copy of the show guide. No preregistration is necessary, but the first 600 to enter the door will receive a free lunch.
