LIVE SHOW CHAMPIONS NAMED AT BEEF EMPIRE DAYS

A 1,578 lb. black-hided entry fed at Finney County Feedyard of Garden City by Derek Sawyer from McPherson was chosen as champion steer of the Beef Empire Days Live Show, June 5 in Garden City. The reserve live steer was a 1,538 lb. Charolais cross fed at Dodge City Feeders by Rob Cross of Lewis.
The champion live heifer was a 1,336 lb. black entry fed at Sunbelt Feedyard of Hugoton by Larry Phillips of Sublette. Brookover Feedyard of Garden City fed the reserve champion live heifer, a 1,470 lb. Charolais cross, for Brookover Land Enterprises of Garden City.
Kansas State University Livestock Judging Team Coach Chris Mullinix, a member of the K-State Animal Sciences & Industry faculty, judged the live show. A total of 76 steers and 53 heifers competed in the live show, which was sponsored by Merck Animal Health.
Cattle competing in the live show were taken to Tyson Fresh Meats at Holcomb for carcass judging. The carcass show judge was Oklahoma State University Professor Gretchen Mafi.
